Sometimes, in exasperation, I ask my kids: “What do you not want to do, and why?”
They’re smart. More often than not, they know what to do, but they’re avoiding it.
Eat their protein and vegetables. Get through their annoyance without blowing up. Apologize.
Adults often know (and don’t do) the hard step too. We just have better evasive maneuvers. We answer frivolous emails instead of sending the memo. We give someone who isn’t measuring up “one more quarter.”
Avoidance is fear. Sometimes I can feel myself procrastinating a painful phone call, and then I can force myself to make it. But sometimes I don’t know that I’m afraid for a while. M…

“hidden protectionism without benefit to Americans is necessary, because otherwise AI will be so unprofitable it will decelerate” is a silly premise no matter who the author

Hard to overstate what a big deal this is for @SierraPlatform. Horizon is an expansion into customizable and compounding outcomes-seeking agents.
Bret, Clay and team are expressing their worldview in their product. They are shipping the AI business model and products that are aligned with Sierra customers (pay for ROI) and deepen Sierra's customers’ moats (their customer relationships).

per the excellent advice of @johnolilly, never persuade yourself to hire someone you don't trust.
why so much hype around robotics, but no robots in homes yet?
insufficient generalization and robustness to deploy. that’s changing, and the way we measure robotics needs to change too!

I wrote an essay for The Humanist Review of AI, a new editorial publication exploring AI’s impact on the world.
The first issue explores the intersection of people and technology through a collection of original essays from a range of thinkers -- mine: "Against The Small Future."

@JeffiniteVC each TRISO particle (the fuel that many SMRs are designed to use) is its own containment system. it is intrinsically much safer to store. there are many paths to nuclear
energy is local. stopping datacenter builds, as NY just did (rather than designing win-win requirements and incentives for local communities and builders) is going to lead to some geos having decrepit infrastructure, and some geos benefiting from grid upgrade, investment and economic revitalization.
the state needs to “plan” faster. the last time the bureaucracy said they’d study energy it led to a 30-year abject failure to build any (clean) nuclear capacity. a standard nuclear EIS takes 4 years to even get a decision
so proud of the amazing team @chaidiscovery! deployment with Eli Lilly, Pfizer and Novartis, and another $400M to build. we are standing in the foothills of the next era of medicine

Americans want to own homes, build wealth, and have economic opportunity. So some are voting for socialists like Mamdani because he has recognized these anxieties and identified a villain (but not a real solution).
What is most likely to help?
Socialism consistently makes everyone equally poor. The experiment has been run already! You don’t build prosperity by attacking the entrepreneurs, businesspeople, or investors who create it. We do not want to be Maoist China, the Soviet Union, Venezuela, Cuba, East Germany, North Korea. This is a very bad club of outcomes.
The next decade will create more business owners than the last century. AI giv…
