Many talk about “winning the AI war with China.” If you have an unachievable and misdirected goal, what is the probability you will write good policy? 2%? It’s critical that everyone understand the reality on the field… This isn’t a winnable finite game. https://t.co/WckWrpmOAn

This might work in an autocracy, but it’s a really bad idea in a democracy.

“Low point in the history of science.” While claiming to “represent” science. The failure to quickly solve the “origin of Covid” is likely due to one of biggest coverups of all time.

@scgwynne I am a massive fan of your writing. Question for you, do you know the details of why Leach applied to work with Hal Mumme? How did he know about him or the opening? What made him reach out?

I think it’s very likely that R1 caused a spike in token usage and therefore a “increase” in GPU demand. But there is an important corollary - this is only happening if people “really, really, really like running R1.” Open source doing open source things. Water runs downhill.

Also known as a “free roll.” I agree with @roelofbotha, you probably don’t want to be on the LP side of an SPV. From ChatGPT: Having a free roll means you are in a situation where you have upside potential with little or no downside risk. It’s commonly used in poker and gambling, but it also applies to investing and life decisions. For example: •In poker, if you’re in a hand where you can’t lose but still have a chance to win more, you’re on a free roll. •In investing, if you’ve already taken out your initial capital and are playing with “house money,” you have a free roll. •In business, if someone offers you an opportunity where you only …

Naive question as I am in energy world. Are there enough spare nat gas turbines available? Could turbines be the limiting factor?

Key downside of projections leaking from the fundraising at large model companies - the press records these & you will be measured against these hurdles, which seem extremely high. After all, remember that valuations are simply discounted future expectations. Back in 1992, Dan O’Brian (famous decathlon athlete promoted as Dan & Dan by Nike) failed to even qualify for the Olympics. Why? He “no heighted” on the pole vault. In the pole vault you get to pick your first height. If he simply starts lower everything is fine. He didn’t. You get to chose your own projections. Chose wisely. https://t.co/9ur4ErpW6R

Important read. Keep in mind @Xiaomi is a very young company. Started as a smart phone company in 2010, but only released its first car less than a year ago. I can’t imagine either US or European incumbent car makers remaining globally competitive.

I know nothing. But just for kicks, imagine a Tesla / Apple co branded vehicle that sells for $200k. Don’t both stocks soar?

This is an amazing round for Austin based @Apptronik. Great to see for Austin, and I am certain as a UT grad founder Jeff Cardenas will help make the UT Robotics program thrive. 🤘🤠 Here is Jeff's profile if you want to follow - @jeffcardn

Nothing screams “validation” more than the incumbents having a reactionary response about something. First DeepSeek now this. Keeps happening in AI.

Now that the state of Delaware has embraced victimless, ambulance chaser lawsuits where lawyers make WAY MORE than their clients, every company 💯 should leave. Here is guidance from @eladgil & @lathamwatkins on choices. https://t.co/6AkeeGdOrU

This is much watch journalism from @FareedZakaria on DeepSeek moment. Sanctions don’t and won’t work. Don’t underestimate China.

Discussions regarding DeepSeek often involve notion that America is an "idea" factory, & China is a "scale-out" factory. These arguments sometimes use heavy labels like "theft" and "enemy." I couldn't help but wonder if this was simply a factor of "place in time." Countries evolve on different timelines, & having a low-cost, industrious work force is part what positions you ideally to be a "scale-out" nation. And you may move past that. The interview with DeepSeek founder makes it clear he is an "idea" person. So I had a discussion with ChatGPT. This makes total sense. If Delaware now encourages victimless ambulance chaser derivative lawsuits then everyone should leave. As I said before, someone could sue your board for not choosing to leave! Corporate malfeasance to stay.

#1 under appreciated piece of DeepSeek/R1 story is use of MIT open-source license. Startups, corporate developers, & hosting cos will LEAP at using it, precisely because it is one of the most open, permissive possible. Key difference from Llama. https://t.co/5OpdTUBjBF https://t.co/u5DGwtvkRR
