OpenAI Phone's Strategic Significance for MediaTek: Brand, AI SoC, 6G, and a Re-rating

Open original source ↗
Whether or not the product itself succeeds, the OpenAI–MediaTek smartphone partnership carries significant implications for MediaTek's smartphone business. The partnership itself could strengthen MediaTek’s brand value, help it build AI agent smartphone SoC capabilities, expand its influence in 6G standard-setting, and support a re-rating of its smartphone business, which in turn should be supportive of the share price over the medium to long term. This note focuses on AI device development trends and the medium- to long-term outlook for MediaTek's share price. Unlike prior analyses that were primarily grounded in supply-chain checks, this note offers a perspective beyond the prevailing market narrative. In recent years, it has also invested in high-profile sports sponsorships, including Formula 1 partnerships with Mercedes and Ferrari and the Manchester United shirt sponsorship. This visibility has helped strengthen Snapdragon’s premium brand perception, supporting a smartphone SoC brand premium roughly 30–40% above MediaTek’s. According to Kantar BrandZ, ChatGPT was the fastest-growing brand by brand value in 2026 (+285% YoY). As AI agent smartphones are increasingly being framed as the next marker of premium smartphones, an OpenAI smartphone would likely attract exceptional attention. Taking ChatGPT's ~900 million Weekly Active Users (WAU) as a base, estimating DAU (Daily Active Users) and layering on the amplification effect from media coverage and social sharing, the potential reach of an OpenAI smartphone launch event could land in the 300–500 million range, which is comparable to the single-event audience of a top global sporting event. This would give MediaTek a brand exposure opportunity on a scale rarely seen in recent decades. Beyond global reach, roughly 80% of Americans have heard of ChatGPT, and ChatGPT is the only AI chatbot that more than half of US teens have used (Pew Research Center), which is a clear signal of its brand standing in the US. The US is the world’s single most important premium smartphone market, yet it was not until 2024 that smartphones powered by MediaTek’s premium SoCs began to appear in that market (GSMArena). The OpenAI partnership should help accelerate MediaTek’s brand recognition among US consumers. ─────────────────────────── ▌Building AI Agent SoC Capability and Strengthening 6G Standard-Setting Influence The demands AI agents place on SoCs differ from those of prior workloads. As agentic workloads run continuously, context state expands across multi-turn inference, tool calls, and memory updates, increasing the strain the KV cache places on LPDDR bandwidth, throughput, and power. That pressure stems from the sustained, always-on, low-latency profile of agentic workloads, which makes power management, memory efficiency, and heterogeneous compute scheduling under continuous inference the central optimization priorities. In addition, AI agent smartphones emphasize always-on ambient sensing. ISP design shifts away from "high-load operation only when the shutter is pressed" toward "continuous low-power operation that delivers both real-time sensing and high-quality processing," which is a second key area of optimization. No fully realized AI agent device experience exists in the market today, leaving processor vendors to design based on assumptions and simulations. Once MediaTek accumulates real-world experience through this project, it will be able to ground its future SoC designs in agentic workload data drawn from genuine usage. 6G is another point of focus. 6G is widely viewed as an AI-native network: on top of higher bandwidth, it must natively support the connectivity demands of a large population of AI agent devices, including persistent connections, ultra-low latency, and on-device/cloud collaborative inference. By extension, having access to real-world data on AI agent network behavior translates into greater influence in shaping 6G specifications. MediaTek's track record on 5G is the relevant precedent. The company moved roughly two years ahead of Qualcomm in proposing the IoT-NTN direction and became a key driver of IoT-NTN standardization. MediaTek completed the world's first IoT-NTN connection test in 2020, and in 2021 used that work to help accelerate IoT-NTN standardization within 3GPP, which is a concrete case of converting empirical data into standard-setting authority and influence. Building on the agentic workload data it will gather while developing the OpenAI smartphone, MediaTek will be in a position to put forward concrete proposals to 3GPP, such as agent-aware modem wake mechanisms, memory-bandwidth-sharing specifications between modem and NPU, and a dedicated QoS class for AI agents. To the extent the standards evolve in directions MediaTek already knows well, the company stands to enjoy a first-mover advantage when 6G SoCs reach mass production. ─────────────────────────── ▌Re-rating the Smartphone Business: Supportive for the Share Price Over the Medium to Long Term MediaTek's recent share price strength has been driven mainly by the Google TPU win and by improving revenue visibility on the AI ASIC business for 2027–2028. The OpenAI smartphone order may not act as a near-term share price catalyst on its own, but it carries two layers of significance for the medium- to long-term valuation case. First, against a backdrop in which the AI agent and AI device trend is already broadly accepted by the market, a clearly defined and highly visible OpenAI smartphone order, through both sentiment and fundamentals, helps cushion the drag from a soft smartphone business, effectively building downside support under the share price. Second, MediaTek's smartphone business is expected to return to growth in 2028, at which point it will likely once again become a key share price driver. Before the rise of the AI ASIC business, both Qualcomm's and MediaTek's valuations were anchored primarily on smartphone business performance: Qualcomm’s historical P/E band topped out at roughly 28–30x, while MediaTek’s was closer to 20–22x. When the smartphone business returns to the center of the valuation framework, MediaTek should be able to draw on the differentiation built through the OpenAI partnership to narrow the smartphone business P/E gap with Qualcomm.
