The following statement by Apple’s senior vice president of services, Eddy Cue, implies that Google search and advertising business are facing potential threats from generative AI (GenAI): Cue noted that searches on Safari dipped for the first time last month, which he attributed to people using AI. Source: https://t.co/EaOXK65zRv Many people view the continued growth of Google's advertising business as evidence that its search services have not been impacted by GenAI. However, this view could be mistaken for the following reasons: 1. GenAI service providers have not launched advertising businesses, so Google Ads remains the best choice for online advertisers. 2. The number of searches would need to decline to a certain extent before it impacts the advertising business. Therefore, Google Ads has not experienced an immediate decline due to GenAI services. Yahoo!'s advertising business provides a good case study of this growth-to-decline history. Yahoo! began its advertising business in 1995 and saw continuous growth until it started to decline after 2008. Google, founded in 1998, started its advertising business in 2000 (Google AdWords). Between 1998 and 2000, Yahoo! was still the preferred choice for online advertisers, and even after Google launched its advertising business, Yahoo!'s advertising revenue did not immediately decline.
