Lots of people asked what we “win” if we beat the Chinese in AI.
Short answer: our economy.
Senator Sanders is effectively proposing the economic equivalent of “defunding the police.” Stripping the tools and speed that let American companies and institutions defend themselves in a rough global neighborhood.
Longer answer:
As AI models and applications grow more powerful, they can discover, circumvent, or disable the software that runs a modern economy. Imagine waking up to widespread banks offline, critical intellectual property (product designs, customer lists, source code) stolen or locked for ransom, and medical and government records compromised or held hostage.
As long as leading U.S. AI labs stay ahead of their Chinese counterparts and continue the practice of giving the latest frontier models to American companies first, so those companies can identify and patch vulnerabilities before adversaries do, we retain a decisive defensive advantage.
Chinese, Russian, and North Korean actors already conduct persistent cyber attacks against U.S. firms and infrastructure. If we deliberately slow or constrain our own labs while China builds superior offensive AI capabilities aimed at the same systems (banks, payment networks, critical infrastructure, Fedwire), we hand them the means to inflict economic damage that conventional cyber tools cannot match at scale.
In short, falling behind in AI is not merely a technology race we lose. It is an open invitation for adversaries to turn the software layer of the American economy from our singular global advantage into our greatest vulnerability.
