This is 100% true. Verifiable fact. Should be first question for anyone in media that interviews anyone there.

With these security/“danger” claims from AI companies, we need a third party lab dedicated to independent reproducibility (and public disclosure). They create chaos with these blogs/press releases, but only they know what really happened. Obviously this is much easier with open models (which is why open source software is demonstrably safer). But I think it could still work. You shouldn’t be allowed to declare “danger” and create chaos if other people can’t verify what you are claiming.

Open models are the competitive edge. If the U.S. doesn’t lead in open, it won’t lead at all.

XPost

Positioning “open models” as dumping is misinformed & will lead to horrible policy decisions. The marginal cost of software is zero. In real competition, price will and should trend there. “Open” is inevitable, sustainable, & favored by customers. https://t.co/OJ9XPcJP7w

@bonabeau @jeremyakahn @huggingface @Thom_Wolf 1/ who intiated the effort at OAI 2/ do you think that person and OAI are liable for what happened? 3/ Who should investigate?

If there has been “theft” that suggests a crime has been committed. But I am unaware of any lawsuits being filed. No company should be allowed to declare infringement without adjudication. I’m not convinced a court would call using a product as it’s designed theft. There is a reason this is being “lobbied” in DC instead of the normal court systems.

“It is going to fail miserably.” I concur. There is zero action DC can take that will stop or slow China’s AI progress. In fact, DC action will very likely help them globally. Tyler is spot on.

KeyPoint! Making a move like this wouldn't just hurt US AI competitiveness, it would negatively impact every US company in every industry - because they would be forced to pay prices for AI that are drastically above market. It would hurt US competitiveness in every field!

This piece from @miramurati & @thinkymachines is quite consistent with the POV this past week from Alex Karp & Satya about companies controlling their own IP. Right place. Right time. Decentralized. Apache 2.0 to boot!

This piece by @GavinSBaker makes me wonder if @elonmusk might consider making future @grok models "open." 1- Like @nvidia they have the resources to maintain an open model. 2- They have activity in many other parts of the stack, which their model competitors do not. 3- It would be a interesting "full circle" from the original decision to make @OpenAI open. 4- There might be a way to leverage the real-time data in X as well, maybe a subscription to integrate that part. 100% speculation on my part.

I really don’t think there is a problem here at all. Plenty of states excited about the opportunity for new investment and progress. Flat out ban and presser keeps people from wasting time. Play on. All good.

Plenty of states have open arms - so I am cool with it. “It is one of the happy incidents of the federal system that a single courageous State may, if its citizens choose, serve as a laboratory…” Since people in these places do use AI, I do wonder if they should have to pay more.

With policy people tend to think of the “idea” of action as important. But often the policy choice fails or even creates the opposite outcome of the concern. “Acting” without high confidence of success is just manic thrashing (& spending). And will likely make things worse.

XQuote

Worth a read (especially the details) if you care about policy and true impact. It’s not what one claims to care about (which is performative & wastes real $$) — it’s what actually happens that matters. From last to first.

This is the only move DC could make that won’t massively backfire. Provide encouragement for more open US models. Simple. Smart. The fastest growing companies of all time that raised tens of $billions & paid record $billions to employees are in no need of a protective bailout.

This is true. Low priced competition w more control, more understanding, and therefore more safety. Bad for wannabe monopolists.

Possible scenarios (ranked in order): 1/ Your country makes the best cheapest products. You export, and your citizens also buy the best. 2/ Your country doesn’t make the best/cheapest; but your consumers enjoy them (Brazil below). 3/ Your country doesn’t make the cheapest/best AND your country blocks access to your market. So you pay more for worst products, and you don’t export. Plus your local companies become less globally competitive as they are protected. #3 is the worst. It’s what Europe did when America thrived. And it’s what many in Washington recommend today.

WeChat has been a little quiet on AI front & perhaps even falling into being considered a laggard. But this week, Pony Ma presented a new vision on how to turn "mini-apps" (still no real equivalent in US) into AI handshakes. Manny partners announced. Could be a powerful move. Read more below.

This is absolutely correct. The only way to fight "open" is with "open." Glad to hear a voice in Washington that understands the real stakes.

Super cool momentum here. Groundbreaking public/private partnerships. And the most effective program for inequality — direct wealth transfer. No unnecessary rake. Great to see new incremental use cases. Love this - business supporting local community.
