Sound like many employees at Anthropic share Jacob's POV, as many posted yesterday that (1) they agree, and (2) said that many more inside the company do also. It would be useful to name this "belief system" so that we can talk about it in a reasonable way. I suspect "doomer" seems derogatory, and "accelerationist" has others uses. If there a word we can use so that we can have proper discourse? I'm very serious. I think it would be helpful.
Great piece that helps explain the seemingly contradictory rhetoric emanating from the closed AI model companies. I agree the #1 actionable take is to hold the companies accountable for their product’s behavior. https://t.co/WQ60O1WlDr

Open, open, open. As I wrote in the @washingtonpost, open-models are the inevitable outcome of high stakes software competition. The more at stake - the more likely open wins. This is water running downhill. https://t.co/6x5qoLbw0k
This is very good. Ben brings a career of thinking to his views on where we are today. My favorite part is the beginning. There is no reasonable path to AI global dominance for the U.S. vs the world. It’s a fantastical notion that falls apart when thinking through the details.
The Internet creates some magical things...
💯Regulatory capture IS the problem.
The word “watermark” comes from photos and is visible by all. This is only identifiable by Anthropic. Once again they are judge, jury, and prosecutor. Lots of reasons to not use their products.
Time to head to Texas or Nevada. Staying is adding unnecessary risks for your shareholders. You should act in your shareholders best interest and flee Delaware. Delaware is no longer consistent. They are targeting companies they don't like.
Different states, counties, and cities trying different things. Beautiful and effective competition of policies. I doubt any tax bills are going down in NY State.
I disagree, I don't think this has to be "game-over" for Google. I do think they have only one play left now - to pull from their own Android/Kubernetes playbook and fully embrace open-models. It's the obvious move in this situation. Details here: https://t.co/P8rbKhIjzH
This industry group is working on an industry standard for how to report AI security incidents. This will drive consistency and transparency and is the safest path forward. Despite 120 members, the large LLM corporations have to-date not signed on. Drives further concern that they are using "breaches" as marketing events - vs wanting to get to true resolution. https://t.co/DuCa5ktrcb

That place looks familiar.
A great new book to help young people think about money!
I favor prosecuting companies that use AI to break existing laws vs allowing those same companies to write new laws. Otherwise you create a perverse incentive to keep doing dangerous things to gather attention and power.
@Jason But Anthropic says using their output should be illegal.
🤣🤣🤣
When I saw this article, I couldn't get Kool and the Gang out of my head. Hat-tip to Claude for the lyrics! I very confused about who might own the copyright. REGULATE (to the tune of "Celebration") [Intro] Regu-LATE! R-E-G-U-L-A-T-E good times, come on! (It's a regulation!) Regulate good times, come on! (Let's file some paperwork!) [Verse 1] There's a hearing goin' on right here, A moat-digging party to last throughout the years, So bring your lobbyists and your talking points too, We're gonna regulate the guys who're gaining on you! [Chorus] Regu-LATE! Regulate good times, come on! (It's a regulation!) Regulate good times, come on! …
I’ve never met Leo, and from all I can gather he was an exceptional student. Well above top 1%. Probably > 1/10,000. That said I don’t think he was a “student of finance.” I asked ChatGPT to name the top 25 investing books of all time. And then asked what percentage of those books discussed leverage and tail risk. The answer below. Quite unusual to chose a career where you are smart at everything else perhaps, but ignorant about one of the most discussed elements of the practice. You have to be willfully uneducated. It’s dangerous to talk about this execution as anything other than reckless and careless. Simply because that’s the only less…
Please stop referring to your own models in the third person when talking about model bad behavior. Humans write the software; humans built the prompts; and they work for your company. “Our” model is doing illegal things. “Our” model is risky. “We” now have liability.
Great summary of where we are on Covid origins from @KatherineEban. Useful detail for all.
If you have any doubt about lab leak and Covid read this. The team that told you “not lab leak” encouraging obfuscation. We really should care about how this happened. That’s the path to prevention.
As Brandeis said: “Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants; electric light the most efficient policeman.” The correct regulatory response here is to demand a full third party investigation of what happened here and share it with everyone. “Our models are too magical” is frankly a bullshit response. Let’s require accountability. That will drive the proper behavior. Not more meetings or signed letters.
@MatthewBerman I think ideas become self reinforcing, and humans prefer to think of themselves as virtuous.
Almost 3 years ago, I believed open-models would become the key threat to the AI incumbents & that unfortunately they would lean into regulatory capture as a response. I underestimated the fervor with which they would use this non-business approach. https://t.co/oFDclTqJDq https://t.co/kYzlwY7JRQ
Huge congratulations to the team at @IonicDigital on their successful Direct Listing today!!!!
"Open" projects are already inherently safer than situations where proprietary large companies hold all the cards. More eyes, more transparency, more analysis. This collaboration - multiple companies all working to ensure AI safety together - is the exact right move. This is the very best path to safe AI. Kudos.
This is 100% true. Verifiable fact. Should be first question for anyone in media that interviews anyone there.
