Everyone freaking out about DeepSeek being a Chinese company collecting your data (including @BillAckman) don’t understand OpenSource. @huggingface says it’s already been respun 500+ times. You can run it today on @perplexity_ai (see below).

I left off a very important #9 for my list below. Open-source leadership is fantastic for our academic community and institutions. Prior to DeepSeek, they were being pushed out by costs. This invites them right back in.

More US companies hosting R1 from DeepSeek. Open-source integrates and spreads so fast. True innovation grease.

XPost

@htifc Understood. When you ping DeepSeek with that type of question, you can see it answering and then stop. Makes it easier to modify than if in the weights. Actually a good thing.

Looks like @AravSrinivas has already removed the content moderation portion of DeepSeek. That problem is solved. Very quickly I might add.

@FOMO_No_Mo @leopoldasch Do you think ChatGPT will admit the core algo was “borrowed” from deepmind? What about whether or not it scanned NYTimes or YouTube transcripts? Seems like there are glass houses on all sides of this neighborhood.

In preparing for my @CNBC segment with @ScottWapnerCNBC today, I watched this 40 minute deep-dive on DeepSeek by @dee_bosa. Must watch. Fantastic detail. https://t.co/viRP1CA71D I also rewatched her December 13 minute piece on scaling limits, which I also thought was fantastic. https://t.co/UCpf9XIssh

More data regarding Stargate. Picture getting clearer, but sounds like many pieces still left to figure out.

XQuote

October article from @anissagardizy8 may have the best clues into the structure of Stargate. An opco/propco structure, whereby the equity owners own the facilities and the servers, & OAI would have hard commitments to "rent" the servers years into future. https://t.co/K1Qszq1iSR

XThread

1. Corporate Structure The OpenA press release says that Stargate is "a new company." Is Stargate established as a standard C-corp, LLC, a joint venture, or something else entirely? 2. CEO Leadership Will Stargate have an independent CEO? Who will lead Stargate on a daily basis, and how is that person chosen? Will they be as operationally intense as the XAI team that launched Memphis? 3. Customer Exclusivity Is OpenAI the sole customer, or will Stargate yearn to serve other businesses? Does Microsoft’s deal with OpenAI impose any exclusivity constraints (the Microsoft release suggests it may)? 4. Operating Partner Role Release says Ope…

50X is a lot. I wonder if Estevez should reconsider his assertion here. I think his policies encouraged unique innovation and did the exact opposite of his intention. Pretty typical for policy. https://t.co/a2dUIy0PA6

Sad to see an AI bill like this being pushed in Texas. Many have worked to make Texas a pro business, high innovation state that has resulted in corporate relocation and a thriving local economy. This is regulatory harakiri. Tons of details below.

XPost

@sundeep Should have taken 100% of GS equity on the bail-out. GM, United also.

XPost

@scheifly Keep in mind, I was referring to startups. The fact that the Mag7 or a group of companies all worth $80B plus are going deep in D.C. is consistent with my view.

It’s become popular for elected leaders to show they are adding value by temporarily moving “red tape” processes to the sideline. The right answer is obviously reconsidering the rules holistically. Otherwise, it just gives the “rule pardoner” even more power.

XPost

@dbroockman @ezraklein @sfplanning It’s all about policy. Keep in mind that Austin is seeing falling apartment rental rates even though the city has the highest growth rate in the country!

XQuote

Creating a patch-work quilt of state by state AI laws is about the worse outcome possible for US AI regulation. Loads of instant red-tape and overhead. Anti innovation. Will help guarantee China runs past us. I’m shocked this is happening.

XPost

@dawallach Almost always true. In pop music genius is underestimated because people believe it’s random luck.

Great policy solves the problem AND raises revenue. Bad policy costs the govt tons of money and makes the problem worse.
