Foundations: Performance in the Next Bear Market & the Caldera Under S. Park & Wall

Detailed study of leaders versus broken stocks, market breadth and what it means for performance in the next bear market Some good weekend reading about markets and how to profit from the next bear market, which may last a long time. I hope you enjoyed last week’s Short Thoughts piece. The article got a better response than I expected, so I figured while I was on the tail of that particular beast, I would continue to hunt it down. Short Thoughts: The AI Cloud Oligopoly, Stages of Grief & a Flashing Bear Market Indicator The first thing was to collect and stitch together decades of data. I have to say, I am impressed by the folks at Siblis…

Well well well. Well. Bloomberg: Broadcom CEO Likens Many AI Investors to Casino Gamblers and more... Broadcom’s Tan said AI model developers need to find customers that can generate returns from deploying the technology, rather than relying on users who are now “wasting money” on tokens as they experiment with AI. “When you are a kid you go to a video arcade, you play. Your parents give you $10 of tokens, you finish it in 10 minutes and you haven’t learned anything,” he said. “That’s what happening in enterprises today.”

Salad days for home builders won’t last. Not a fan of home builder stocks. Building is a commodity business. Land appreciation/development is most of the ROIC. By early 2000, 70-80% of stocks were in bear markets, and the indices continued to move higher. I have a word for that. Denial.

In this article I greatly expand on this tweet. The market's grieving process has been interrupted the last couple decades by heavy doses of monetary and fiscal cocaine. So much so that it is now hard to tell if grief can ever find its position again. Denial is perhaps most easily found in market breadth indicators, and I follow one in particular that seems to give a very strong signal every few decades.

The stock market is quite obviously in its first stage of grief, denial.
