There are graveyards full of people who thought they had more time. These individuals were busy making plans for the future. They had dreams and aspirations, always telling themselves “one day…” That day never came though. Each person ran out of time. This realization first struck me while I was watching the 2011 movie starring Justin Timberlake, “In Time.” Here is the premise: "In 2169, people are genetically engineered to stop aging on their 25th birthday. This is when a one-year countdown on their forearm begins. When the countdown reaches zero, the person “times out” and dies instantly. Time is a universal currency that can be transferred directly between people or time can be earned by working at a company. The wealthiest people have so much time it is nearly unlimited, while the poorest people in the film are constantly close to running out unless they find a way to acquire more." We may not have clocks built into our forearms, but there is an invisible clock counting down the moments until we take our last breath. You won’t know when it is going to happen. Sometimes there are signs like declining health, but other times death appears in an instant without warning. The uncertainty can make people uneasy. But the anxiety won’t change the reality. I have found the best way to deal with an unknown future is to live vigorously in the current moment. If you want to do something, go do it sooner rather than later. Take that vacation you have been dreaming about. Start the business that you can’t stop thinking about. Live in the city in which you feel most yourself. Begin working towards the goal you can’t stop thinking about. Action silences uncertainty. Remember the graveyard of people who thought they had more time? Many of them wish they had spent their time differently. They would have accelerated their decisions and actions. Time is strange. It feels unlimited, yet it is incredibly scarce. We all have less time than we think. Don’t waste a second of it. This is an excerpt from my new book, How To Live An Extraordinary Life Volume 2.
