Colombia officially opens embassy in occupied Jerusalem —— Colombia officially opened its embassy in occupied Jerusalem on Wednesday, joining a small group of countries, including the US, that have taken the 'symbolic step' of recognizing Israeli 'sovereignty' over the holy city. “This is an important date for the State of Israel. It’s also an important date for the city of Jerusalem,” Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said during a ceremony, where he signed the Colombian embassy’s guest book. Colombia’s new president, Abelardo de la Espriella, announced in July that he intended to relocate the country’s embassy to Jerusalem, marking a significant departure from his predecessor, who had criticized Israel over its genocide in Gaza. In 2018, during his first term, US President Donald Trump broke with the longstanding international consensus by moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, where Israel’s parliament, prime minister and most major government institutions are based. Since then, only a handful of smaller countries aligned with Washington have followed suit, including Fiji, Guatemala, Honduras, Papua New Guinea and Paraguay. Kosovo and Somaliland, neither of which is a UN member state, have also opened embassies in Jerusalem.
