CFTC staff have reportedly been told to retract their analysis of suspicious oil trades.
Unusual Whales caught many of them.
Let's take a look at billions of dollars in well-timed bets on oil futures, placed before major Trump announcements on the Iran war.
March 23:
About $580 million in oil futures, roughly 6,200 Brent and WTI contracts, were sold in a single minute, between 6:49 and 6:50 a.m. ET.
15 minutes later, Trump posted that he was delaying planned strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure.
Oil fell more than 10%.
April 7:
Traders placed roughly $950 million in bets on falling oil prices in the hours before Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran.
Oil then fell about 15% in a single session.
April 21:
About $830 million in Brent and WTI futures were sold roughly 15 minutes before another major U.S.–Iran announcement.
The traders saved millions.
The fallout:
March 24: The White House warned staff against trading on confidential information
April: The CFTC opened an investigation into the March 23 and April 7 trades
Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Sheldon Whitehouse, and Reps. Ritchie Torres and Sam Liccardo, demanded probes
