Heating oil in Maine now costs nearly 80% more than a year ago. The statewide average hit $5.97 a gallon as of Oct. 5, per the Maine Department of Energy Resources, after setting a record above $6 in late September. A year ago, it was about $3.30. That’s roughly $675 more to fill a standard 275-gallon tank. Maine is the most heating-oil-dependent state in the country: about half of households rely on it as their main heat source.
