Open original source ↗By December 1776, the 🇺🇸 cause looked bleak:
•Washington’s army was exhausted, underpaid, & shrinking as enlistments were about to expire on January 1.
•The British & their German mercenaries controlled much of New Jersey.
•Morale among soldiers & civilians was dangerously low.
Washington needed a bold move—or the revolution might collapse.
THE GAMBLE
On the night of December 25 Washington made a decision:
•He led about 2,400 soldiers across the ice-choked Delaware River in a snowstorm.
•The troops marched 9 miles in freezing weather.
•At dawn on December 26, they surprised the German garrison @ Trenton, whose commander, Colonel Johann Rall, didn’t expect an attack right after Christmas.
The result:
•A decisive 🇺🇸 victory
•Nearly 1,000 Hessians captured
•Minimal 🇺🇸 losses
Why it became legend
The battle itself was small, but its symbolic power was enormous:
•It proved the Continental Army could win against professional European soldiers
•It revived public support for independence & convinced many soldiers to reenlist
•It led directly to another victory @ Princeton days later
