There is something to this, but I disagree that it’s the main explanation. I think the main explanation is actually much dumber and it’s that a lot of people have simply decided that AI was useless for ideological reasons ranging from neo-luddism to anti-billionaire animus. If using old models were the main explanation, those people would change their mind upon being exposed to more recent models, but that’s almost never the case in my experience. They often say things about LLMs that already weren’t true of models that could be accessed for free more than a year ago.
