These are the quoted author’s words.
2 things happened: -- the push to equalize outcomes by dumbing down the curriculum for everyone disrupted the acquisition of basic skills by the lower tiers -- this forced parents who cared about educating their kids to compensate with online and other private tutoring, which is widely and cheaply available and very effective, making the failure of public schools to teach irrelevant to those whose needs used to be met tolerably by the public schools Thus, the drive to equity produced the very opposite of their ostensible outcome: the top did better, the bottom did worse, greater inequality was the result. But widening inequality, of course, creates the predicate for further striving after equity, thus creating more opportunities for sinecures and consultancies for further educational gimmicks and nostrums that will in turn exacerbate the problems they purport to address. Rinse and repeat until the district spends $30K per student while basic literacy and numeracy tanks, in turn driving privatization schemes.
