Quoted context
These are the quoted author’s words.
Cf. 'Seeing like a State' by James C. Scott. Once the state has your information, it's going to use it. It will keep you 'safe' but you will have to show 'compliance.' It will give you benefits so long as you obey. The history of Legalism in China since the Qin shows that what the state really wants is to treat the entire population as though it were enlisted in the army and able to be commanded. The republican form of government is the best defense against the selfish logic of the State.
