Open original source ↗The public conversation around open-source AI models has been about data security, but there is another conversation about to take the industry by storm.
The Chinese open-source models allow you to self-host models and refrain from sharing your data with the large model labs. But the weights in the Chinese models sometimes reflect Eastern world views, including socialism and communism.
This is going to push many companies to seek American open-source models. They the data security offered by open-source, self-hosted models, but they also want Western views embedded as the default in the model.
We actively see this trade-off at Silvia. It is hard to provide personalized financial insights to users if you are using models that have subtle socialist or communist viewpoints.
As the industry’s understanding of this problem picks up, I anticipate a big push for the American open-source/open-weight models. We may even get to the point where venture investors or users demand products use American models or they won’t fund/use the products.
