Quoted context

These are the quoted author’s words.

Shylock counts among the Shakespearean heroes that have transcended his dramatic origins and have become universal archetypes and evocative adjectives. Describing someone as a Shylock because of his greed is no more anti-Semitic than describing his hypocrisy as Pharisaical would be. Both words long ago shed their original derogatory association with Jews. Right now, the primary political threat to the Jewish community is Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral candidacy. If so-called Jewish leaders can’t recognize that threat and instead would prefer to indulge tiresome partisan one-upsmanship and to parade the worst symptoms of Trump Derangement Syndrome in public fora, they would best serve our cause by resigning.
