it seems obvious that 1) ai future is bright and 2) we have our work cut out for us in areas of massive impact (robotics, bio, materials science, etc.) collecting data / reward signal will be hard, but possible with creativity never been a better time to be an ambitious founder I am so excited about codegen for codegen’s sake! better software for everyone! but it’s less obvious you get a lot of generalization to other domains

because it seems to be okay to say anything now: manage your emotions at work. that’s part of being an adult
1/ If software is eating the world, electronic warfare is devouring the battlefield. To make sure American and its allies win this critical front of modern conflict, we're leading a $25M Series A in @DistSpectrum along w/@natfriedman and @ShieldCapVC. Why we invested: 2/ More from the founders, @wulff_alex, @iostruhl and Ben Harpe: https://t.co/YWJ8d70YY6 3/ Thanks to @JBogaisky at Forbes for covering their public launch: https://t.co/VmHjtfNjxD 4/ Join the mission: hiring in nyc https://t.co/bBNd473s76
Fund 2! $200M, now with @mvernal
companies usually only spy on competitors when they are losing, don’t have their own ideas for product and distribution, and lack integrity. emerging market winners tend not to engage in this kind of (illegal) nonsense. they are too busy building and serving customers very bearish sign is when companies start spending many hours in competitors’ products, or are explicitly reverse engineering. I’ve seen this happen to multiple portfolio companies, but competitors can’t win executing on…our existing product
how do growth firms deal with the amount of lying in expert network calls
Me and @mvernal are excited to support https://t.co/7OBQzGmEuR%E2%80%99s mission to empower small businesses. Combining the best of people and AI will democratize and improve pro services (like tax!)
This is a huge coup for the American semiconductor industry and makes so much sense. Congrats to @lip_bu Tan and Intel Corporation - I am incredibly optimistic.
people in tech love to shit on bankers but the capacity to take pain is an key element of greatness, and doing banking at the top 2-3 firms pretty good filter for that (at least 10-15 years ago) a lot of engineers (esp fang types, not Tesla/startup types) haven’t experienced crunch. I’m not glorifying crunch or banking hours, but it is a valuable capability but — you don’t learn anything spreading comps the 1,000th time. that’s just work. Hopefully replaced by AI 🔜 my friend and gs-era boss @krisfredrickson (social ghost) is one of the best team-builders I know, and he puts folks (for growth vc) through a stressful exercise which is esse…
Congrats to @ycombinator on 20 years! @garrytan and team are an amazing force in the tech ecosystem, on behalf of startups. https://t.co/MqCJDyI1LK
1/ How do the best startup teams hire well? Every company that finds product-market fit has customers to support, fires to handle. But if they don’t prioritize hiring, they fall into a vicious cycle, increasingly behind and unable to scale. 2/ The winning alternative is simple but hard. The best startup teams prioritize hiring. They make it a core competency. They expect it to cost time. They compress the cycle, schedule same day, debrief immediately, post mortem. Pace and throughput matter. 3/ So does understanding people as full people. Great team builders figure out someone’s motivations, requirements, goals. Who their advisors, stakeho…
deep data reasoning ✨
Love to see the talent density and creativity of research work at @cartesia. Now with more GPUs oldie* but goodie about our original preseed investment *oldie = published 3 months ago
sometimes people are uncomfortable hiring friends. they don’t want to risk relationships, they’re nervous about screening, feedback, perf, firing, impartiality. all secondary issues if you want to win, hire your friends if you don’t (and win), they will ask why you didn’t

the realization that software only ate a small part of the world over the last decade, and it's about to eat a lot more of it
New dominant question is not “is this the end of scaling” but how does the base model quality interact with test-time scaling / (o1/o3 style RL)? Is it multiplicative (a little bit moar in the base model will you get advanced new behaviors in the reasoning version still)? Otherwise, next OOM of $$$ shifts away from pretraining (with big implications for infrastructure)
We’re either A) entering a AI paradigm where only “high taste testers” can intuit the progress of models, or B) GPT 4.5 is just incremental and uneven improvement
@michelletandler anecdotally many people using AI for conversations they don’t want to burden friends and family with a struggle - this seems valid. at the same time, wonder what that does to relationships long term
One will get further assuming good intent in others until given any evidence to the contrary. trust is earned. being quick to distrust folks who have worked for years to earn that trust is counterproductive. Paranoia makes one hard to support

amazing how quickly everyone reoriented around RL
1/ The biggest blocker to effective AI-in-bio is lack of quality data, but @vevo_ai is open-sourcing their gigantic #Tahoe100M single cell dataset (on @arcinstitute's new Virtual Cell Atlas)!
